Kevin, who may possibly lay claim to having raced Pen y Fan more times than anyone else (*analysis needed!), is closely followed Don Ashton, who had already won the English V50 Champs just before that race and won the V50 category at Pen y Fan that day, leading to his British V50 title a few months later.

Photo by Ken Price - on the cover of 1992 June/July issue of "Up and Running" magazine by Dave Woodhead. Kindly sent to me by Calvin Ferguson, Don Ashton’s grandson, who promises to race at Pen y Fan in 2019 (but fears he may not match his time!).

It also reminds me what a hot day we had - especially poignant since only a few hundred metres away those SAS reservists were getting into big big trouble.

For those using this as a guide to the race, note that Mark and the others around him took a descent line of questionable merit from Pen y Fan. Instead of descending direct down the steep part of the slope, they went way further right, taking the diagonal route across the slope. This may appear more direct on the map, but in practice it spends more time on steep ground, and involves an extra stream crossing and minor rise before re-joining the outward route above the stile.

Photo's were kindly taken by Tony Law on the summit (using a very old and primitive digital camera, he says), and at the finish by an innocent bystander who didn't run away when I handed her my camera - she did an excellent job (with a cheap camera) so thanks to her on everyone's behalf. Please let us know who this was, if you know, so we can acknowledge her input more satisfactorily.

Pete Ryder and Harry Matthews led the way in a battle from start to finish. Harry took a flyer on the descent, injuring significant proportions of himself and eating quite a bit of mud, but bravely kept it together and even took the lead for while until the final sprint finish. We couldn’t separate them at the tape, so it was 1st prize shared, with a time of 1:16 or so. Conditions were very heavy underfoot so times were generally down.

I hobbled round my second race since breaking the knee, and just clinched the V40 prize in about 1:25.

Emma Bayliss won the ladies race, and Mynydd Du won the male and female team prizes.

We hope Gerry Ashton makes a speedy recovery after his bad tumble on the descent, and thanks to Emily Rose for helping him off the hill.
