Correction to 1992 results: a new v50 winner

We were contacted today by the grandson of Don Ashton of Blackburn Harriers. He spotted that the results on this website didn't match those in The Fellrunner.
This is what we had, i.e. the original results sheet, with Don as a Senior M and Roger Bell winning 1st V50:

And this is what Calvin was able to send me, from the Fellrunner, with Don correctly identified as 1st V50.

Calvin says Don was born on 3rd December 1938, so he would’ve been 53 on race day in 1992, which tallies with the Fellrunner version. So we are happy to correct the online results, and Don’s win can be seen here:
https://www.breconfans.org.uk/Results?race=PEN+Y+FAN&year=1992&sex=M&club=ALL&cat=MV50

Sorry Roger Bell, whoever and wherever you are!

And looking into this reminded me just what an incredible race that must have been! Not only Keith Anderson setting the phenomenal men’s record, and Claire Crofts equalling the ladies’ record, but a star-studded field with a truly inspiring number of runners finishing in times rarely matched in the last ten years. As the present organiser, I’m wondering how we might attract this level of talent back to the race? In previous years, I thought having the “bounty” record-breaker prize might help, but that obviously didn’t work. Ideas welcome!!

PS Don’s grandson promises to race this year. And if he has his grandfather’s genes he might just make an impression.

Crispin ...

Entry list - now with links to each runner's previous results

A few months back I restructured the Brecon Fans database to ensure we have one primary record for each runner, no matter how many times they have entered and run our races. This was harder than it might sound, as we had a) lots of runners with variations in their spellings and even dates of birth and it was hard to tell which variations were real, and b) we had lots of runners called Jones, Davies and Williams! Anyway, once done, I realised it should be simple to activate a link to each entering runner's previous results in the races, if any.

Job done @ http://www.breconfans.org.uk/entry-list and I hope it proves useful.

Time permitting I also want to add graphs of who has entered the races most times, graphs of individual performance through time (depressing!). and perhaps some statistics on overall performances through time.

Results page fixed at last

To cut a very long story very short, I have fixed the searchable results page which has been broken for months! Apologies for the interruption.

I use to keep the results in a separate Access database file that I could upload to the web server easily after the race, but the mechanism for reading this broke when my web hosts migrated onto 64-bit Windows Server 2012. On that operating system it is only possible to have either 32-bit or 64-bit Access database drivers, and it wasn't working out well for me. I have now moved this data into the main SQL Server database that runs the web site, and made some minor code changes on the results page to accommodate this. The procedures on race day will change - we will still enter all the results into our standalone race management database, but then instead of uploading the whole file, I'll push some data from that database into the web-facing database over ODBC.

Actually I'm very happy with this - the results page seems to load and query quite fast, and overall it's a better way to do things.

Fan y Big 2012 - blood, sweat and mud

Just back from the race – another classic. Pete Ryder and Harry Matthews led the way in a battle from start to finish. Harry took a flyer on the descent, injuring significant proportions of himself and eating quite a bit of mud, but bravely kept it together and even took the lead for while until the final sprint finish. We couldn’t separate them at the tape, so it was 1st prize shared, with a time of 1:16 or so. Conditions were very heavy underfoot so times were generally down.

I hobbled round my second race since breaking the knee, and just clinched the V40 prize in about 1:25.

Emma Bayliss won the ladies race, and Mynydd Du won the male and female team prizes.

More photos will come later from Ali Tye. Now to process the results…

We hope Gerry Ashton makes a speedy recovery after his bad tumble on the descent, and thanks to Emily Rose for helping him off the hill.

Fan Y Big Horseshoe photos

Photos from Ali Tye here http://www.fellrunningpictures.co.uk/fanybig2011.html

When I get results from Mark I'll put them on the web site. However I'm away with work all week, so it might be next weekend.

So, in summary, a good turnout over 100 entries; weather not half so bad as it could have been, though screaming wind round the horseshoe; James Waldie from Cornwall won (and took the series prize), Ben Thingy from Dark Peak was 2nd, Ed Gamble from from Cheshire was 3rd.

Helen Fines smashed 3 mins off the ladies record.

I came 5th, Mynydd Du got the team prize, and everyone had a lovely time!

Pen y Fan results and photos

Click here for full results including ascent/descent times. If you spot any howlers do let us know. Much of the computer entry was done in the context of a collapsing tent, so errors could have crept in!

Click here for photos from Corn Du and the finish. Unfortunately we didn't get a full photo of James Waldie's total wipe-out in the finishing straight, as he tried to overtake Daniel Hooper (256), but it will stay with me. This shot was taken about 0.1 seconds before the crash with James visible in extreme right, about to eat the turf.

And here's another great set of photos taken by Gerry Ashton above the stile.

Roll on Fan y Big! I'm feeling lardy and unfit, and drank far too many bottles of Breconshire Brewery's finest ales yesterday, but we'll see what we can do.
